The soybean or soya bean (Glycine max) is a species of legume native to East Asia, extensively grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. The plant is classed as an oilseed rather than a pulse by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
Soybeans initiated in Southeast Asia and were first Fat-free (defatted) soybean meal is a major and cheap source of protein for animal feeds and many prepackaged meals; soy vegetable oil is additional product of processing the soybean crop. For example, soybean products such as textured vegetable protein (TVP) are ingredients in many meat and dairy analogues.
Soybeans are a legume. They are high in protein and oil, making it a very useful crop for feed for livestock and food for humans. In fact, every 60-pound bushel of soybeans produces 48 pounds of soybean protein meal and 11 pounds of soybean oil. The crop is also beneficial in replacing the soil with nitrogen. These benefits drove farmer adoption of the crop.
As the crop has grown in adoption, farmers, universities and seed companies have worked to improve the soybean plant�s ability to grow and adapt to various climates and conditions. Soybeans are grown in U.P, M.P, Chattisgarh,Goa&Gujarat in India.
Soy is one of the few plants that provide a complete protein as it contains all eight amino acids essential for human health. Best season for harvesting of soya crop is from 3rdweek of June to July. Soybeans can be sown on stored moisture and after rainfall but it is rare that this is possible.
About 85 percent of the world�s soybeans are processed, or "crushed," annually into soybean meal and oil. Approximately 98 percent of the soybean meal that is crushed is further processed into animal feed with the balance used to make soy flour and proteins. Of the oil fraction, 95 percent is consumed as edible oil; the rest is used for industrial products such as fatty acids, soaps and biodiesel.
