FORMALIN is a solution of formaldehyde in water with a variety of uses, including:

·        Preservation: Formalin is used to preserve biological specimens, such as tissue samples for histological studies, and human remains for embalming. 

·        Disinfection: Formalin is used as a medical sterilant and in household cleaning agents. 

·        Radiation injury: Topical formalin is used to treat radiation injuries. 

·        Chemical assay: The formalin test is used to assess inflammatory pain caused by injury. 

·        Resins and textiles: Formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of resins and textiles. 

·        Rubber manufacturing and tanning: Formaldehyde is used in the rubber manufacturing and tanning industries. 

·        Paper industry: Formaldehyde is used in the paper industry. 

·        Animal feed: Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in animal feed. 

·        Cosmetic products: Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in cosmetic products. 

·        Laboratory procedures: Formaldehyde is used as a laboratory fixative or preservative. 

·        Home building products: Formaldehyde is used in home building products. 

Formalin is a hazardous compound with a toxic vapor. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent, irritating odor. Formalin is corrosive and contains 37–50% formaldehyde by mass. It also contains methanol to prevent the precipitation of formaldehyde polymers. 

If you are exposed to formalin, you should: 

·        Remove the victim from exposure.

·        Flush the eyes with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes.

·        Wash exposed skin areas with soap and water.

·        Contact a local hospital for further instructions.
