Commiphora mukul is woody, bushy shrub which grows to 1–4 m height. Its stems and branches are thorny and are covered with wax and ash coloured bark that peels into thin rolls. Oleogum resin (known as Guggul) from the Guggul tree (Commiphora Mukul), found in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and has been used to treat various diseases including hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, rheumatism, and obesity. Ayurvedic physicians extensively used guggul gum for treating arthritis and related conditions for centuries. The fumes of guggul gum resin are used to cure fever, bronchitis, nasal congestion, laryngitis and phthisis. Commiphora mukul or Guggul is used as an expectorant and for treatment of diarrhoea, fatigue, headache, jaundice and indigestion; topically guggul is used for treatment of burns, and also as an insecticide and insect repellent.
