Raw hulled sesame seeds.
Usage Tips
Sesame seeds can be used in both savoury dishes and sweet desserts. Add sesame seeds into the batter the next time you make homemade bread, muffins or cookies. Sesame seeds also add a great touch to steamed broccoli sprinkled with lemon juice. Try combining sesame seeds with rice vinegar, tamari or soy sauce and crushed garlic to create a delicious dressing for salads, vegetables and noodles.
For a quick, Asian inspired dinner, sauté chicken with sesame seeds, tamari or soy sauce, garlic, ginger and your favourite vegetables.
Toasting sesame seeds helps to bring out their full, nutty flavor. To toast sesame seeds, place the seeds in a dry pan over medium heat, or on a sheet in a 275ºF oven, until golden and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
Storage Tips
Sesame seeds should be stored in the refrigerator since the high oil content can cause the seeds to go rancid.
Points of Interest
Sesame seeds are more than just for decorating breads and hamburger buns. They lend a subtle crunch and rich, nutty flavour to all kinds of foods, and they also come packed with nutritional benefits.
One of the oldest known condiments, sesame seed has been used for thousands of years and is an integral part of a variety of cuisines around the world. It is commonly used in East Asian cooking, sprinkled as a condiment over rice, for example, or used to coat deep-fried sweets. Sesame seeds are also the main ingredient in tahini, a paste made by grinding toasted, hulled sesame seeds, which is a central ingredient in Middle Eastern cooking.
Nutritionally, sesame seeds are rich in copper, magnesium and calcium. They also contain B vitamins (particularly vitamin B3), vitamin E, folic acid, and are a good source of vegetarian protein.
Other
Sesame seeds were originally a staple food of the Middle East. They are said to be the greatest of all seeds due to the high nutrition value as well as their oil. To enhance the nutty flavour, sesame seeds can be toasted in a dry skillet over medium heat until golden brown. They can be used to garnish sweet and savory dishes and used in baking. Raw or roasted sesame seeds can be ground into Tahini (available in our wet pail section).
