    Tur dal or arhar dal is a split pigeon pea with subtle nutty flavor. It is one of the yellow dal. Tur dal is an ancient crop, believed to be cultivated for food since last 3000 years. In Indian grocery store, you can get tur dal with oil coating to increase its shelf life or one without oil coating.Skinned and split tur is the most widely-used form of the lentil. It is used in popular recipes like south India sambhar, Gujarati dals, the famous puran poli and lots of other tasty dishes. 
    Tur dal has a thick gelatinous or meaty consistency, and takes a little longer to cook than moong or masoor dal. 
    Tur dal is also commonly known as rahar, toovar, togari, tuvaram paruppu, etc in local languages around Indian subcontinent. Also spelled, Toor dal.
