vibration fork level switch (also called a tuning fork level switch) is a point level sensor used to detect the presence or absence of liquids, powders, or granular materials in tanks, silos, or pipelines.
Working principle
It operates on the vibration damping principle:
A fork-shaped probe vibrates at its natural resonance using a piezoelectric element
When the fork is in air it vibrates freely
When it is covered by material (liquid/solid) vibration is damped
This change in frequency/amplitude is detected and converted into an ON/OFF output signal

An optical level switch uses infrared light:
It has an IR LED + phototransistor inside a small prism tip
When the tip is in air light reflects back to the receiver
When immersed in liquid light refracts (escapes) into the liquid
This change triggers an ON/OFF switching output
