Melt Flow Tester

  • ASTM D1238 Standard Test Method for Melt Flow Rates of Thermoplastics by Extrusion Plastometer Method A
  • ASTM D2839 Standard Practice for Use of a Melt Index Strand for Determining Density of Polyet
  • ASTM D3364 Standard Test Method for Flow Rates for Poly(Vinyl Chloride)
  • ISO 1133 Plastics -- Determination of the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and melt volume-flow ra
The manually operated test procedure is very simple to undertake. Molten Polymer is extruded through a closely controlled orifice (die)from the apparatus using pre set conditions of temperature and pressure produced by a dead weight system. The extruded polymer is cut off manually and is then weighed. Using the time interval to extrude the polymer its flow rate over 10 minutes can easily be determined, thus giving the Melt Flow Index (MFI) or Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR) in g/10 min. By conducting a simple Density Test at test temperature on the same material using the same pre set conditions and a known piston travel distance the Melt Volume Rate (MVR) can also be determined.
The 6MBA Melt Flow System is supplied as standard with a replaceable hardened steel cylinder liner, standard test die and piston along with 2.16 kg test load and cleaning ancillaries. The temperature controller used is a 16th DIN type and displays the current temperature and set point and is accurate to 0.1 deg C. A PT100 Platinum Resistance Thermometer is used to accurately control the temperature of the barrel. The maximum allowable temperature variation along the length of the cylinder liner is in accordance with ISO1133 International Test Standard. An integrated timer is also fitted to accurately time the extrusion of the material in seconds to enable you to calculate the Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR). All documentation is supplied including a product user manual and a fully traceable calibration certificate.
Optional weights can be supplied to cover all testing parameters to International Test standards and for the heavier weights the optional weight loader can fitted to the apparatus for ease in loading the piston. The weight loader can also be used as a hold back feature for materials which have a high flow rate.

Dynamic Friction Tester

The Advanced Static and Dynamic Friction Tester brings together accurate load cell measurement with advanced microprocessor technology to give the most accurate, user friendly Friction Tester system to be designed by Ray-Ran. Frictional properties of plastic film and other materials are accurately calculated with specified test conditions selected such as test sled weight, test velocity and temperature making this apparatus ideal for all types of flexible packaging, foils, paper, board, rubber, linoleum, textiles and leather.
Accurate and repeatable test results for Static and Dynamic Friction co-efficient values with normal separating loads of up to 1 kg are easily determined for any combination of materials using a standard test sled or specific peel attachment.
To calculate the static friction the apparatus records the peak friction value at the precise moment that movement occurs after which, the dynamic friction is immediately observed. To measure this peak friction value, the advanced microprocessor continually monitors the output signals of the load cell. Load cell readings are taken beyond the peak load in order to confirm that the slope of the load curve is reducing. When the static frictional value has been determined by the microprocessor the dynamic friction is measured twenty times during the selected travel distance. The result given is the average of these twenty readings. However, by displaying the results graphically on a computer, each of the twenty readings can be inspected to examine any variation in the test results over the selected travel distance.
The large on board liquid crystal display (LCD) provides simple on screen instruction and using the alpha/numeric membrane keypad test parameters such as user names, material reference numbers and batch numbers are entered and stored in operator lists for future recall and results presentation. Testing parameters such as test velocity, sled weight and settling time are also entered to give the required testing conditions. If Temperature is important to your testing requirement then the Static and Dynamic Friction Tester can be supplied with an optional heated bed. After each test has been conducted the results are displayed on the LCD giving the static and dynamic co-efficient as well as the test load result in grams. Batch statistics are automatically updated after each test and results are shown in graphical and tabular format for analysis when downloaded to the supplied PC software.
For quality control purposes the Static and Dynamic Friction Tester can be set with High and Low limits which are clearly defined when test results are downloaded showing the user instantly if the material is a pass or fail.
The apparatus is supplied as standard with Ray-Rans Techni-Test Windows based PC software for connection to the apparatus via an RS232 or Ethernet connection. Test results can be printed directly from the Techn-Test software or can be saved and exported as .CSV files which can be opened with Microsoft Excel in tabular form which can be manipulated to your specific requirements such as preparing a graphical presentation or copying the results to a Word document for a report presentation if required. Low Temperature Brittleness Tester

The Ray-Ran Low Temperature Brittleness Tester has been designed to study the effects low temperatures have on plastic materials when subject to impact loads and conforms to ASTM D746 and ISO R974 International Test Standards. Many materials which are flexible at normal ambient temperatures become brittle at low temperatures which severely affect the materials impact strength. By plotting the percentage failure rate of the test samples against the reduction in temperature, the brittleness temperature of the test samples can be determined.
The apparatus consists of a low temperature bath with electronic PID temperature controller and a PT100 platinum resistance thermometer accurate to 0.1C which accurately controls the heating cycle of the test and records the temperature next to the test samples. Precise temperature control is readily achieved by means of a built-in heater which in conjunction with controlled addition of refrigerant enables any temperature down to -70C to be readily attained and held. To ensure temperature stability within the bath during the cooling and heating cycle a stirrer motor system is also fitted to the apparatus. Suitable means should be used to ensure the liquid medium can be lowered to the test temperatures required such as adding solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) to Methyl Alcohol.
The test procedure is very simple to conduct and a sufficient number of test specimens should be tested so the Brittleness Temperature can be calculated on a statistical basis. Test specimens are clamped in a stainless steel cantilever beam fixture which is immersed into the low temperature bath. The specimens are allowed to condition at a maintained temperature in the heat transfer medium and are then simultaneously subjected to a single blow given by a free falling pendulum impact hammer through the means of an intermediate striker at a constant velocity of 2.1 m/s. The samples are then removed and examined to determine whether failure has occurred. Temperatures are then increased or decreased to find the temperature at which 50% of the specimens fail. This is defined as the Brittleness Temperature.

Rotary Abrasion Tester

The TABER Rotary Platform Abrasion Tester - Model 5135 or 5155 is commonly referred to as the Taber Abraser (Abrader) or Rotary Platform Dual (Double) Head Tester. First introduced in the 1930's, this precision built instrument was developed to perform accelerated wear testing. Capable of providing reliable data in a matter of minutes compared to the years that may be required by in-use testing, the Taber Abraser (Abrader) rapidly became the world standard for evaluating abrasion resistance.
Since its inception, the Taber Abraser has been used for quality & process control, research & development and material evaluation. Used to test a wide spectrum of materials, the instrument has been referenced in numerous standards and specifications (including plastics, coatings, laminates, leather, paper, ceramics, carpeting, safety glazing, etc.).
Description
Taber tests involve mounting a flat specimen approximately 100mm square or round to a turntable platform that rotates on a vertical axis at a fixed speed. The standard material thickness that can be evaluated with the Taber Rotary Abraser is 6.35 mm (materials greater than 6.35 mm but less than 40 mm can be tested with optional accessories). Two genuine Taber abrasive wheels, which are applied at a specific pressure, are lowered onto the specimen surface.
Characteristic rub-wear action is produced by contact of the test specimen against the sliding rotation of the two abrading wheels. As the turntable rotates, the wheels are driven by the sample in opposite directions about a horizontal axis displaced tangentially from the axis of the sample. One abrading wheel rubs the specimen outward toward the periphery and the other, inward toward the center while a vacuum system removes loose debris during the test. The wheels traverse a complete circle on the specimen surface, revealing abrasion resistance at all angles relative to the weave or grain of the material. The resulting abrasion marks form a pattern of crossed arcs in a circular band that cover an area approximately 30 cm2.
Each turntable has dual abrading arms that are precision balanced. Independently operated, the abrading arms can be raised (or lowered) to mount or inspect specimens. Each arm is loaded for 250 gram pressure against the specimen, exclusive of the weight of the wheel. To increase the load to 500 or 1000 grams, a mount for auxiliary weights is located on the outside of the abrading wheel bearing assembly. This location ensures that weights are concentric with the abrading wheel. A stud on the rear end of the abrading arm is used to carry an optional counterweight (used to reduce the load by 50, 125 or 175 grams).

Taber Abrasers Model 5135 or 5155 offer the following standard features:
  • Specimen turntable speed control options of both 60 rpm and 72 rpm.
  • Easy-to-use operator interface that includes tactile feel buttons and a four line digital display. Simple on-screen instructions allow the operator to change the test parameters via the MENU button. An internal memory stores the settings.
  • A vacuum system is included and is critical for the proper operation of the instrument. The vacuum nozzle(s) is hinged to an adjustable mounting at the rear of the housing. A precision vacuum nozzle adjustment control allows the height to be modified for accommodating varying specimen thickness.
  • Precision stainless steel weights of 250 grams and 750 grams are furnished to provide standard wheel loads of 500 and 1000 grams. Weights are marked to show total load on each wheel. This marking includes the weight of the abrading arm (250 grams).
  • A Quick Release Mounting Hub permits quick wheel mounting without the need of a locking nut, increased clearance for the vacuum pick-up nozzle and a larger viewing area for the test specimen. A beveled retaining nut provides a positive locking force on the wheel hub retaining lip making certain that the wheels remain securely fastened until disengaged.
  • Assembled in a sturdy, sealed aluminum housing.

Taber Stiffness Tester

The TABER V-5 Stiffness Tester - Model 150-B or 150-E is used to evaluate stiffness and resiliency properties of materials up to 10, 000 Taber Stiffness Units. This precision instrument provides accurate test measurement to 1.0% for specimens 0.004" to 0.219" thickness. Materials include paper products, cardboard, plastics, metals, textiles, rubber, wire, tubing, felts and other sheet materials.
Description
Incorporated in the TABER V-5 Stiffness Tester is a bi-directional pendulum weighing system. Providing an accurate and responsive method for measuring small load increments, this system is a critical component for determining material stiffness or resiliency. Nine (9) distinct ranges permit testing of materials that are extremely lightweight and flexible (such as cellophane or thin metallic foils) to items that are very rigid (such as plastics).
For test ranges 2 - 9, specimens are mounted on the Taber V-5 Stiffness Tester using a clamping system. Located on the pendulum, the lower faces of the specimen clamp jaws are exactly on the center of rotation. This ensures a constant test length and deflection angle for accurate and repeatable results. Both jaws of the specimen clamp are adjustable, so the test specimen can be positioned precisely in the center regardless of material thickness. Force is applied to the lower end of the specimen by a pair of rollers. The rollers, which are attached to a driving disc located directly behind the pendulum, push against the test specimen and deflect it from its vertical position. The pendulum applies increasing torque to the specimen as it deflects further from its original position. The test point reading occurs when the pendulum mark aligns with the appropriate driving disc mark (7 1/2 or 15), which points to the stiffness reading on the dial point. The final reading will depend on the range in which the test is being conducted and what scaling factor to use. The instrument outputs the moment load applied to the test specimen in TABER Stiffness Units (g cm).
Note: The right hand roller includes a ratchet stop mechanism that greatly reduces the potential for inter-operator error caused by over or under-tightening. The travel on the right hand assembly automatically stops when the roller contacts the specimen.
To allow the testing of materials with different stiffness properties, range weights can be applied to the pendulum. For extremely light weight materials, a compensator range weight is mounted to the top of the pendulum. Range weights of 500, 1000 and 2000 "Taber Units" are mounted to the bottom of the pendulum and required for stiffer materials. An optional range weight set of 3000 and 5000 Taber units is required for test ranges 7, 8 and 9.
Range 1 is used with Taber's optional Sensitivity Range Attachment (also referred to as SR or High Sensitivity Attachment) to test extremely lightweight and flexible materials whose Taber Stiffness Unit value are between 0 - 1. Examples include cellophane, natural fibres and synthetic filaments, tissue paper, metallic foils, films, etc. The attachment includes two parts, the Driven Pins Holder which is secured between the clamp jaws, and the Driving Pins Holder which is mounted to the studs in place of the left and right hand rollers. Both parts include precision pins that are oriented horizontal to the face of the V-5 Stiffness Tester. A specimen 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" is mounted such that the second and fourth pins are above the specimen. As the driving disc rotates, the fourth pin of the Driving Pins Holder pushes down on the specimen while the first pin pushes up. As the sample is deflected, the Driven Pins Holder aligns the pendulum to the appropriate stiffness value. For Range 1, the specimen is only deflected to the right.
Many customers have also utilized the Taber V-5 Stiffness Tester to evaluate wire and cable stiffness characteristics. The tester now incorporates a "v-notch" in the clamps to accommodate this testing. Suggested samples are 70mm long and 3mm - 8mm in diameter, and centered in the notch with care so as to not pinch or crimp the sample. For wire and cable samples less than 3mm diameter, it is recommended to secure the sample at a location in the flat region of the clamp. Samples with curvature may interfere with proper set-up and function of the Stiffness tester and should be avoided. In addition, test results obtained should be used for comparison only - that is, between lots, between materials, etc.
The following chart is used as a guide when setting up the instrument to determine which test range to use for the type of material being tested.

Multi Media Abrasion Tester

The TABER Multi-Media Abraser provides a reproducible method to measure the relative abrasiveness of most fluids, powders, pastes and semi-solids. Used in conjunction with the Taber Rotary Abraser, the Multi-Media Abraser is valuable to characterize how these mediums cause wear when they come in contact with different components.
The sliding wear concept utilized in the Multi-Media Abraser was first utilized to evaluate different types of adhesive and sealant formulations. The amount of wear observed in laboratory tests correlated well with the amount of wear that different adhesive formulations caused on moving parts in pumps and other application equipment in an automotive manufacturing setting.

Description
The medium to be tested is placed in a specimen dish that includes a replaceable stainless steel wear disc on the bottom. As the dish rotates, an integral drive shaft operates a set of gears which turn the spline shaft. At the base of the shaft is a pin holder with three (3) replaceable hi-grade brass pins that rotate in the opposite direction of the specimen dish. As the test medium flows between the brass pins and stainless steel wear disc, the material acts as an abrasive and causes wear.
To test a wide range of material viscosities, both load and pin holder speeds are adjustable. The standard testing load on the brass pins can be varied from 250g to 1, 000g (in 250g increments with the supplied weight discs). Optional weight discs can bring the maximum load to 2, 500g.
The rotational speed of the specimen dish is dependent on the model Taber Abraser that is being used. By changing the gearing, the rotational speed of the pin holder can be altered as noted in the table below. The more abrasive or viscous, or larger the particulate size a media presents, the more resistance it adds to the system. Therefore, a lower / slower drive ratio speed should be used. The optional gearing provides a greater range of testing speeds and is recommended for specimen loadings greater than 1, 750g or where there is a low percent by volume particulate concentration in the medium.

For simplicity, gearing is color coded.
  • Orange- Used to test most materials.
  • Yellow- Results in 23% increase in speed. Recommended to reduce the total number of test cycles; reduce the "fluid wave" in front of the rotating pin holder; level-off the media as it is passed by the pin holder.
  • Red- This optional gear provides a 0.6:1 ratio and is the slowest available speed. As the specimen loading increases to 1750g or greater, it may be necessary to run at a slower speed to supply adequate torque to rotate the pin holder and maintain a constant speed.
  • Green- This optional gear provides a 290% increase in speed compared to the standard gear set-up. Recommended when there is a low percent by volume particulate concentration; low sample loading; and when the rate of wear may be insignificant over an extended number of cycles.

Heavy Duty Linear Abraser

Similar to Taber's Linear Abraser, a test attachment is secured to the bottom of a vertical spline shaft and accessory weights may be placed on a weight holder affixed to the top. A precision bearing on the spline shaft creates a "free-floating" test system. As the test arm moves in a linear motion, the "free-floating" system will raise or lower as the test attachment follows the contours of the specimen being tested - curved or flat.

The base load of 500 grams consists of the test attachment, spline shaft and weight holder. Accessory weights of 1000, 2000 and 4050 grams are included and can be added to the weight holder to increase the test load. With a high torque motor, the Heavy Duty Linear Abraser can accommodate a maximum testing load of 20 lbs. (weight sold separately).

Other features of the Heavy Duty Linear Abraser include a slotted roller channel allowing stroke length adjustments up to 330mm (13 inch); five preset speeds including 15, 30, 37, 45, and 60 cycles per minute; and an integrated T-slot table for securing specimens during testing.

With interchangeable attachments, the Heavy Duty Linear Abraser can also be configured similar to the Linear Abraser to evaluate the relative resistance or susceptibility of a material surface to wear and abrasion, scratch, gouge, scrape, rub, and more. In addition, the instrument can be used for both wet and dry testing. To increase test output, an optional second test arm kit may be added to perform two tests simultaneously.

Taber Reciprocating Abraser

The Taber Reciprocating Abraser includes a counterbalanced arm which pivots on an adjustable height gantry system. The counterweight allows the user to balance the test arm, ensuring precise test load set-up regardless of the weight of the attachment. Incorporated at the end of the arm is a tool holder to which optional attachments and weights may be secured. A sliding specimen platform moves in a horizontal, reciprocating motion under the stationary tool holder.
Test parameters such as stroke length (6 - 155mm), speed (3 - 75 cycles per minute) and load (1N - 24N maximum, with included weights of 1N, 2N, 2.5N, 5N, 10N & 24N) are adjustable so optimal settings for each material can be established.
To expand test loads, an optional weight support may be affixed to the top of the tool holder. This permits using auxiliary weight discs originally intended for Taber's Linear Abraser 5750 in place of the standard weights supplied with the instrument. Weight discs are sold individually and available as 10g, 20g, 50g, 75g, 100g, 150g or 250g.
The Wearaser collet assembly comes standard with each Taber Reciprocating Abraser, along with CS-10 and H-18 Wearaser abradants. The size and shape of a pencil eraser, the Wearaser is made using the same high quality Taber abrasive media found in our Genuine Taber abrading wheels. This permits the use of equivalent abrasive materials with the Reciprocating Abraser as well as Taber's Linear Abraser and the Taber Rotary Platform Abraser.
The standard specimen table provided with the Reciprocating Abraser is 216mm x 278mm (8.5" x 11") with drilled tapped holes to accommodate specimen clamps or optional specimen fixing plates. To evaluate most flat specimens, specimen clamps or the optional Wide Slot Fixing Plate may be suitable. For flexible materials such as textile products, the optional Specimen Fixing Plate Kit might be used. Products with a slight contour can also be secured in place using the specimen clamps provided or a custom fixture.
The Reciprocating Abraser can accommodate two additional test arm kits (sold separately), permitting up to three tests to be performed simultaneously.

Oscillating Sand Abrasion Tester

The TABER Oscillating Abrasion Tester - Model 6160 is best known as an "oscillating sand tester". Described in ASTM F735 (Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Transparent Plastics and Coatings Using the Oscillating Sand Method), the oscillating sand tester is used to measure the relative abrasion resistance of a material to surface abrasion and / or marring. The primary application of the Oscillating Sand Abrasion Tester is for transparent materials and coatings utilized in windows and lenses, but it might also be used to evaluate organic paints & coatings, plastics, metals and other materials.
Description
Rigid specimens that are 100mm square and less than 12.5mm in thickness are mounted in a holder located in the bottom of a sand tray so the surface is flush within 1mm. The tray is filled to a uniform depth (e.g 12.5mm) with a standardized abrasive media such as quartz silica or alumina. A scotch-yoke drive system reciprocates the tray in a back-and-forth (to-and-fro) motion which causes the entire mass of the abrasive media to shift significantly within the tray. The oscillating movement of the abrasive media results in a random pattern of scratches which simulates normal everyday wear.
Test parameters can be altered with Taber's Oscillating Sand Abrasion Tester, and allow the operator to select the operating stroke length (6.5 to 150 mm) and speed (variable from 100 - 200 cycles per minute). ASTM F735 specifies the sand tray travels a distance of 100mm at a speed of 300 strokes per minute.
In addition to the dry abrasion test, the oscillating sand abrasion tester may be used with abrasive slurry to perform erosion tests. For this application, the optional 4 inch deep tray is suggested along with a specimen tray cover. In place of the abradant, a slurry would be used (e.g. 50 - 50 mixture of solids and distilled water). The abrasivity of the slurry is dependent on the concentration of the solids in the liquid vehicle, along with the characteristics of the solid particles (shape, hardness, size, and friability).
Using a custom specimen holder (not supplied), materials of various shapes may also be tested. To generate useful data, it is important to recognize that the amount and force of abrasive media that contacts the specimen surface will change based on the curvature of the part. Specimens with a severe contour may inhibit the movement of the abrasive media during the test.
An optional kit is available to conduct the Bayer Abrasion Test on contoured lenses. This set-up involves testing a specimen against a control lens for comparative purposes.

Abradants

In December 2011, Taber Industries learned that the sole source provider of the 4/10 abradant described in section 6.1 of ASTM F735 was sold and the new company discontinued the product. The ASTM subcommittee responsible for this test method is working on initiating a round robin study to characterize / qualify a potential replacement material. The recommended material is a 6/9 Silica Abrasive Media which is available from Taber Industries. If you would like more information, please contact us.
There are a variety of standardized abradants that could be used with this instrument. Besides the silica abrasive media, other potential abradants include alumina (zirconia), silicon carbide, aluminum oxide and glass bead. For repeatable test results, the sizing and shape of the abradant is absolutely critical.

During testing, the abradant may become 'worn' as the sharp edges contact the specimen and other abrasive particles. To ensure reproducibility, new abrasive media should be used for each test. It is also recommended that the abrasive be replaced after 300 cycles for longer cycle tests.

Webbing Abrasion Tester

A specimen clamp bar secures the specimen to the instrument while a specimen roller ensures an angle of 85 (2) is maintained between the specimen and hexagonal (hex) abrasion bar. Test specimen is weighted, and then subjected to a unidirectional reciprocal rubbing action as it travels back and forth over the hex abrasion bar. The test specimen passes over two of the six abrading edges of the 12" hex abrasion bar during each test.
Depending on specimen width, up to three specimens can be evaluated simultaneously. Other features of the Taber Webbing Abrasion Tester include a slotted roller channel allowing a maximum stroke length adjustment of 330mm (13 inch); five preset speeds including 15, 30, 37, 45, and 60 cycles per minute; hinged, transparent safety cover; and a standard weight set of 2, 4 & 5.2 lbs. (an optional weight set of 3 & 5 lbs. is also available).
The Webbing Abrasion Tester has the capacity to test materials with a breaking strength over 13, 500 N per ASTM D6770, MIL-W-23223B, US Department of Transportation FMCSA Part 571.209 and other internationally recognized test standards.

Abradants

Two (2) fresh edges of the abrasion bar should be used for each test. If only one specimen is being tested at a time, the next specimen can be abraded on a different part of the hex abrasion bar. Once the entire length of the bar has been utilized, it must be rotated to expose two (2) new edges. After the entire surface has been utilized the hex abrasion bar should be discarded and replaced.

Scratch Tester

A removable scale beam is mounted on a pivotal shaft projecting from an adjustable gage block. An adjusting screw permits the height of the pivotal shaft to be raised or lowered, corresponding with the thickness of a test specimen up to 12.7 mm (0.5 inches). This adjustment allows the scale beam to be maintained in a level position in respect to the specimen and turntable. Designed with an integrated bearing, the scale beam can be tilted in a rest position enabling the operator to mount or remove specimens.
A calibrated sliding weight is mounted on the scale beam. By changing the position of the sliding weight, the load applied by the scratch tip (shear tool) can be adjusted between 0 to 500 grams. A second calibrated weight may be attached to the end of the scale beam, thus increasing the load capacity and changing the scale to 500 - 1000 grams. Engraved graduations are marked on the scale beam representing 10 grams per division.
Operated by an on/off switch, the motorized turntable rotates at a constant speed to ensure greater accuracy in test results. The turntable rotates in a counter-clockwise direction, but with a simple conversion the turntable rotation can be reversed (for more information contact Taber).
For materials sensitive to scratching, an optional Scale Beam Modified Weight Set is available that converts the scale by 1/10 to 0 - 50 gram range. To increase the testing load from 1000 to 1500g, an optional Scale Beam Fixed Weight is available. To satisfy EN 13310 (Kitchen Sinks - Functional requirements and test methods) an optional weight that provides a 15N load is also offered.

Scratch Tools
To evaluate a material's resistance to scratching or shearing, various tools are available for use with the Shear / Scratch Tester:
  • Conical Diamondtools (Models 139-55 and 139-56) are used for scratching materials of ordinary hardness. These tools are precision lapped to a 90 angle, and are available with a radius point of 3 mil (Model 139-55) or 3.5 mil (Model 139-56).
  • Diamond Scratchtool (Model 139-58) is used for scratch testing unusually hard materials. This tool is the converging point from three sides and edges of a perfect cube.
  • 1.0mm Hemispherical Scratchtip is ideal for materials that are fragile or when a sharp cutting tool is too aggressive. Intended for use with model 550 or 551, this tool has a modified post and requires the Scale Beam Height Extension Kit.
  • Carbide Scratch tipsatisfies EN 14565 for resilient floor coverings. This tip includes a 45 angle and 0.25mm radius point.
  • S-20 Tungsten Carbide Contour Shear Toolis used for shearing tests. Precision ground, this tool features a cutting edge lapped to a 25mm diameter with a 30 clearance. The edge is set at a 22 shear angle in relation to the rotation of the table and is designed to shear a groove between 50 to 100 mils in width.
  • Other shear tools include ModelS-20-3 'Honda' Tungsten Carbide Tool(similar to S-20, but no radius) andS-20-4 Tungsten Carbide Tool(similar to S-20, but R2.6mm).
Over time, the scratch / shear tools will wear out. Due to material differences in the test specimen, there is no way to predict how long the tool will last. A Diamond Standardization Plate is also available to perform the standardization procedure referenced in test method ISO 4586-2. These plates are manufactured from a high molecular weight polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cast sheet, and provide an inexpensive method to determine if the diamond tool is worn. Sold in packages of two, each plate is 4 inches square with a 1/4" center hole and is pre-dried and vacuum sealed.
Taber recommends that an extra tool is kept on hand for standardization purposes. If you have access to optical measurement equipment that offers an accuracies of 0.01mm and 1, you can monitor the wear on your scratch tools. Inspect the tool at set intervals (e.g. every 250 or 500 tests), if any flatness or other kind of damage is found the scratching tool should be rejected and replaced with a new one.

Employing the principle of cantilever bending, a rectangular specimen is supported on a smooth low-friction horizontal platform. A weighted slide is placed over the specimen and advanced at a constant rate. As the leading edge of the specimen projects from the platform, it bends under its own weight. The bend angle indicator can be set at either 41.5 (0.724 rad) or 45 (0.785 rad) below the plane of the platform surface, and includes an easy to read bend angle reference scale with 5 graduations. Once the material flexes enough to touch the bend angle indicator, the test is stopped. Using a scale calibrated in both metric and English units, the length of the overhang is then measured and flexural rigidity and bending modulus can be calculated.

The Fabric Stiffness Tester is available with or without the Hand Crank Speed Control Option. This feature allows the operator to control the rate of speed that the specimen is advanced.

NOTE: In general this instrument may not be suitable for very limp materials or those that show a marked tendency to curl or twist at a cut edge.

Falling Sand Abrasion Tester

Based on a design described in ASTM D 968 and other internationally recognized test standards, the Falling Sand Abrasion Tester consists of an 8" diameter sand reservoir which includes a 60 taper funnel. Standardized abrasive particles placed in the reservoir are released to a guide tube by an abrasive flow gate key. The guide is a 36" straight, smooth-bore tube which contains the abrasive particles as they fall. Specimens are fixed under the guide tube at a 45 angle in a receptacle that includes an opening at the bottom allowing the abrasive particles to be collected in a container. A sturdy base and support system hold the apparatus in a vertical position.

Abradants

Although a variety of abrasive particles have been used, silica sand and various grades of silicon carbide continue to be most popular. To ensure reproducible results, the abrasives must be graded to a particular sieve size.
Note: Silica sand is typically characterized by its roundness of grains and produces a slower rate of abrasion on organic coatings.
It has been noted that for 3 mil dry film thickness, many of the older coatings would require 20 to 200 liters of silica sand to achieve a failure. Today's more durable coatings may require up to 600+ liters of sand to wear-through. For an extremely durable coating, the Taber Rotary Abraser is preferred as the Falling Sand method tends to be laborious and time consuming with the handling of large quantities of abrasive.

Pipe Burst Testers

Benz creates a new instrument to measure hydrostatic burst strength of pipe and tube
The Benz Pipe Burst Tester (PT2100) tests pipe, tube and hose from 1/8" to 12.0", measuring burst pressure up to 3000 psi. Custom burst pipe testers can measure higher pressures and larger diameter samples.
The Benz Pipe Burst Tester is unique, with a push-button, dial-in control panel and a dedicated microprocessor controller designed specifically for testing pipe, tube and hose.
Built into the PT2100's main console are three software programs.
  • A rapid-burst test shows a realtime curve of increasing pressure until the sample fails.
  • A pass-fail test ramps pressure up to a pre-defined point, then releases the pressure.
  • A load-and-hold test ramps pressure to a specified number, then holds it at that pressure for a time period set by the operator.
The PT2100 can also plot pressure over time with a PC and Benzwin software package (optional). Burst pressure curves can be compared to similar curves for other samples, providing documented statistical evaluation.
The PT2100 is used to test PVC, PE, and PET pipe, meeting standards of ASTM and the Plastic Pipe Institute. It tests flexible hoses, such as auto radiator hoses, gasoline pump hoses and other hoses used in hostile environments. It is used for surgical, aviation and military hoses and tubes, including silicon and elastomeric-based hose and tube.
The PT2100 can run without modification on either 110V or 220V power, 50 or 60 Hz. The console is 20" wide by 30" deep by 48" high and is built with stainless and powder-coated steel. Pressure-relief valves drain into a pan that can be tied into a factory drainage system with a 2" coupling at the PT2100's base.
Like other instruments from Benz Material Testing Instruments, the PT2100 carries an extensive one-year parts and labor warranty.

Falling Dart Impact Tester

BMC-B1 is designed for determination of mechanical properties of packaging materials such as plastic films, laminates and paper by a free falling dart from a certain height. This instrument is designed according to ASTM D1709 with method A & B.

Principle
Before starting the test, choose test method, and estimate an initial mass and m. Start the test. If the first specimen fails, decrease the mass of the falling dart by m. If the first specimen is not a failure, increase the mass of the falling dart by m. Continue the test according to this rule. In brief, increase or decrease by m according to whether the former specimen is a failure or not. After 20 specimens, calculate the total number of failed specimens N. If N equals to 10, the test is over. If N is less than 10, add specimens and continue to test until N equals to 10. If N is greater than 10, add specimen and continue the test until the number of non-failure specimens reaches 10. Then the tester calculates the test results automatically according to specific formulas.
