Imiquimod cream 12.5% is a prescription-only medication used to treat a variety of skin conditions.It is classified as an immune response modifier, and it works by stimulating the body's immune system to fight against abnormal skin growths or viral infections.

Uses

Imiquimod 5% cream is indicated for the topical treatment of:

• External genital and perianal warts (condylomata acuminata) in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older.Imiquimod does not cure the virus that causes the warts, and new warts may appear during treatment.
   
   

   

• Superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC), a common form of skin cancer.
   

   

• Actinic keratosis (AK), a precancerous skin condition caused by sun damage, on the face and scalp.
   

   

How to Use

Imiquimod cream is for external use on the skin only.It is typically applied at bedtime and left on for a specific duration (usually 6 to 10 hours), after which it is washed off with mild soap and water.The frequency and duration of treatment vary depending on the condition being treated, so it is crucial to follow a doctor's specific instructions.

• For genital warts: The cream is often applied three times per week for up to 16 weeks.
   

   

• For superficial basal cell carcinoma: The cream is usually applied five times per week for 6 weeks.
   

   

• For actinic keratosis: The cream is typically applied twice a week for 16 weeks.
   

   

It's important to wash your hands before and after applying the cream.Do not cover the treated area with an occlusive bandage unless directed by a doctor.

Side Effects

Imiquimod is known to cause local skin reactions, which can be a sign that the treatment is working. Common side effects include:

• Redness, itching, burning, and pain at the application site.
   

   

• Flaking, scaling, dryness, or thickening of the skin.
   

   

• Blisters, scabs, or bumps.
   

   

• Skin irritation and swelling.
   

   

More serious side effects can include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, and muscle aches.Changes in skin color at the treated site (either lighter or darker) may also occur and could be permanent. If you experience severe side effects or if they do not go away, contact your doctor immediately.

Important Precautions

• Imiquimod cream can weaken condoms and vaginal diaphragms, so it's essential to avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the skin to prevent irritation to your partner and to ensure the effectiveness of these birth control methods.
   

   

• Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and tanning beds while using imiquimod, as it can increase sun sensitivity.
   

   

• The cream is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.
