Standards

  • AATCC 128
  • ISO 9867
  • ENKA 3061

Why Do We Need to Test the Wrinkle Recovery of the Fabrics? In the process of wearing and keeping the fabric, because of the external forces, such as folding, shearing, compression, bending and washing, it is difficult to return to the original level state even after removing the external force. This phenomenon is called wrinkle. Wrinkle not only seriously affects the appearance of fabric, but also leads to severe wear along the crease or wrinkle direction, which accelerates the damage of fabric. Therefore, crease recovery is one of the important indexes to evaluate the fabric’s properties.

Test PrincipleFabric wrinkle recovery instrument is used to test the recovery ability of fiber fabric samples under a certain load after bending for a certain time. Under the condition of standard atmospheric pressure, apply a predetermine pressure to the sample with the standard wrinkle device and keep the time set. The pressurized sample will produce uniform deformation through the whole structure of the instrument and the precise spiral column. Then the sample is compared with the standard sample and rated.

Sample Preparation

  • Cut three samples, 150mm * 280mm each. These should be cut with the long direction running in the warp or the wale direction of the fabric.
  • At 21±1 and 65±2% humidity, each sample remained at least 8 hours in the state.

Testing Procedure

  • All tests were performed at the environment of 21±1 and 65±2% humidity.
  • Raise the top flange of the recovery tester and fix it to the top of the tester with the lock pin.
  • Wrap one long edge of a pre-conditioned test specimen around the top flange of the wrinkle tester, with the face of the specimen on the outside. Fasten the specimen in position using one of the strips of Velcro.
  • Wrap the other end of the specimen on the flange, and then wrap the second piece of Velcro around the bottom of the specimen so that it forms a “closed tube” of fabric.
  • Adjust the bottom edge of the specimen so that it lies smoothly without sagging between the top and bottom flanges.
  • Withdraw the locking pin and lower the top flange gently with one hand until it comes to rest.
  • Immediately place a total mass of 3500 grams (all three weights) on the top flange and record the time.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the three weights and raise the top flange, carefully avoiding altering any of the induced wrinklings.
  • Clamp the short edge side of the sample with a clip and hang the sample on a hanger, so that the length direction of the sample is perpendicular to the ground.
  • After 24 hours in this conditioned atmosphere, take down the sample and rate it.

The force required for bursting or complete rupture of the board is measured through a Digital Indicator. The bursting strength defines the materials quality as compared to the others. Digital Bursting Strength Tester provides a hydraulic load under a rubber diaphragm of a specific area of the sample under test. It can be used to accurately determine the bursting strength of paper, corrugated cardboard, carton box, card board, leather cloth or synthetic leathers. value is expressed in terms of kg/cm2. My Q, one of the leading manufacturers of testing instruments offer wide range of paper and packaging instruments. My Q Digital Bursting Strength Tester is utilized for measuring the bursting strength of paper/strong paper- board by submitting it to an increasing uniform hydraulic pressure. The procedure involves preparing the specimen for test and mounting the sample between two circular clamps. The specimen is then, tightened with the help of geared handle provided. The increasing pressure (hydraulic) is then applied by the handle. The diaphragm is expanded till the specimen ruptures. The reading on the digital display is the Bursting strength of the given test specimen in kg/cm2. For more details about bursting strength tester contact us.

MyQ Shoe Flex Tester is perfect for the determination of full shoe ability to withstand the flexing stresses effects, produced on various parts of the shoe. Also, different parts like soles and uppers of a shoe are tested individually for flexing endurance with the use of Flexometer & Ross flex tester. The shoe flex tester provides results, which are associated to the real performance of the shoe in total.

MYQ Shoe Flex Tester simulates the outcomes of actual walking on the shoe. The specimen of test is held strongly at the toe part using an appropriate toe last and clamp, while the heel part has an individual last on which the shoe is strongly tied as in real use.

Upper-end of the last has an effective system to connect a suitable link mechanism. On a rotating block the mechanism is connected to an eccentric pin so as to provide the link, a to-and-fro movement. Both the length of the link and the eccentricity of the pin in the block are adjustable to offer different angles of deflection of the shoe, with respect to toe's flat portion.

There is a rotating block movement by means of two stage V belt, a motor and pulley arrangement. A digital counter provided with memory backup to record total number of test cycles, and key reset. This standard tester is effectively designed to test one pair of shoes at a time. Also the special models capable of testing two / four / six pairs of shoes are available.

WATER RESISTANCE TESTER- PENETROMETER

The uppers of shoes get folded over the toe portion every time a step is taken. These repeated folding cause the finished grains to start cracking, resulting in loss of water resistance to ensure that the leather uppers retain their water resistance for a reasonable period of use, the action of such folding on them is simulated by subjecting test specimens taken from the leather to a water penetration test using an electrometer.

In this test, the test specimens are held in form of thoughts between two cylindrical grips one of the grips is then repeatedly moved towards and away from the other along their common axis, the test specimens are kept immersed in a water bath unto a part of their

periphery. Penetration is detected when electric conductivity is established between the inside and outside surfaces of the test specimens. The time needed to cause penetration of water through the test specimens is determined and taken as an index of water-resistance of the leather. The test can be continued to determine the per cent gain of weight of the specimen due to water absorption and also to determine the mass of water that has transmitted over a known time interval.

Crimp Tester

  • Maximum test length 400mm
  • Maximum elongation 125 mm
  • Tension load 3gm to 20 gm

The Crimp in a yarn is defined as the mean difference between the actual length of any yarn and its apparent length in the fabric after weaving. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the apparent length of the yarn in the fabric.

Determination of the crimp of yarn is carried out by marking a known length on the fabric, removing the marked yarn in such a manner that to dose not lose its twist, holding between two grips at the marked points, and slowly extending it till it is subjected to a specified straightening tension. The increase in length of yarn is determined and expressed as a percentage of markedlength to obtain the value of crimp.

My Q Crimp tester is designed to determine the crimp of yarns taken out of fabrics. One end of the yarn is held in a pivoted loading grip on which the desire tension load is applied by means of a sliding weight acting on a lever arm, while the other end is held in a movable grip which is mounted on a screw and can move along the direction of the yarn, stretching it in the process. the distance moved through by this grip gives the extension of the yarn, and can be measured ona scale fixed by the side of the grip assembly.

The loading grip is pivoted on jewel bearing and mounted on a slider platform which can be moved toward or away from the moving grip to enable different marked length of yam to be tested. The test length is indicated on scale fixed on the base of the apparatus against a pointer fixed to the sliding platform.

The yam is held in between the two grips and pulled by moving the movable grip away from the loading grip. The tension under which crimp is to be determined is set on pendulum by moving the sliding weight and is indicated on a load scale. When the yam is under the specified tension, the pendulum lifts off its support, thus breaking a contact and turning off a low voltage indicator light. The elongation of the yarn when the light just goes off is noted, from which the valve of percentage crimp can be calculated.

It consists of test specimen holder with a cylindrical opening adjustable between 15.5 to 16.3 mm to clamp the test specimen with an arrangement to adjust the length of test specimen protruding out. The holder is mounted by a screw mechanism along a length of a rotating drum on which the abrasive cloth is fixed. The movement of the screw mechanism and drum is given by an electric motor, gearbox and chain mechanism to give the specified speed of rotation to the drum and the specified lateral movement to the test specimen holder. The swivel arm and test specimen holder are so disposed that the test specimen is pressed against the drum under the specified load with its center axis at an inclination of 3 degrees to the perpendicular in the direction of rotation and placed above the longitudinal axis of the drum. A rack and pinion arrangement to rotate the test specimen about its axis during the test (whenever desired) is also provided. The abrasive cloth is firmly fixed to the drum using a suitable peel able adhesive with the ends of the abrasive cloth butt jointed together. The equipment is provided with limit switches which, in addition to giving over travel safety to the movement of test holder by preventing the lower edge of the test specimen holder to touch the abrasive cloth. The equipment is built on the rigid steel base and finished in gray metallic and bright chrome/zinc plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish. The molding dies, rotary type cutting dies (hollow drill) for preparing test specimens and extra abrasive cloth are available as optional accessories.

MyQ new Digital Tensile strength tester is helpful to identify tensile strength & elongation of fabrics. In the industrial textile industry, tensile strength typically refers to the strength and elongation properties of the material. Textiles can be tested in many forms, including single strands, yarns, webbing, woven, braided materials and non-woven fabrics.

Most textile fabric tensile testing is performed as either a grab test, to eliminate edge effects, or a strip test, including edge effects. For a grab test, the grips of a testing machine clamp a fabric sample in the center using jaws smaller than the sample width. For a strip test, the grips clamp a strip of fabric using jaws wider than the sample width.

  • Dimensions Length: 480 mm, Width: 350 mm, Height: 950 mm
  • Standards BS 3084, CNS -1083, QB/T 2171-1995

Application

  • Zipper Reciprocation Tester, to determine the resistance to reciprocation of zipper (slide fastener). The test specimen is subject to a specified number of cyclic operations whilst under lateral and longitudinal tension.
  • Zipper Tester catches the head of zipper to do reciprocating movement in a constant speed for 30 times per minute. Integral counter is set to stop the drive when a pre-selected count has been reached.
  • Equipped with a sensor so that the machine will stop automatically before the zipper is broke. Adjustable stoke 40100mm is offered as request.

What is a Zipper Reciprocation Tester

The zipper reciprocation tester is used to test that whether the zipper can withstand reciprocating pulling operation with a specified number of times when the zipper is reciprocating under transverse and longitudinal tension in the instrument. During the test, the tester drives the zipper at a constant speed and moves 30 times per minute until the specified number of times is completed. Slider fastener reciprocating tester mainly detects the limit value of zipper endurance and makes a reasonable evaluation of zipper performance.

Test Project

  • Test of flat tensile strength: flat tensile strength is the most basic strength index used to test the ability of teeth chain to resist transverse force in an occlusal state, which is very similar to the state of actual use.
  • Test of the tensile strength of the top stop: interlock the teeth chain of zipper, and pull the slider to the top stop, this can measure the strength of the top stop, which simulates the ability to resist external forces when pulling the slider over the top stop or moving the top stop from the rib with the zipper in a grip state.
  • Test of the tensile strength of the bottom stop: Pull the slider to the bottom stop, the strength of the bottom stop and the resistance of the internal components of the slider can be measured by pulling the teeth chain on left and right.
  • Test of the horizontal tension at the zipper’s bottom, that is, the tensile strength of the opening part of the zipper’s lower end.
  • Test of the locking strength of the slider: the locking strength and the resistance of the internal components of the slider through stretching the left and right zippers when the buckle is locked in the middle of the zipper.
  • Test of the comprehensive strength of the slider: Apply a force to the slider in the direction perpendicular to the slider body, get the comprehensive strength of the slider when slider body is separated from the slider.

Operation Method of Slider Fastener Endurance Tester

  • Start the power switch and adjust the knob so that the drawing clamping device is in the lowest position (easy to grip the sample).
  • Turn off the power switch, select a positioning piece with an appropriate thickness, which fixed to the slider of the zipper, fix the zipper head on the sheet and lock it.
  • First, fix the bottom stop of the zipper to the upper chuck roughly(the center line of the chuck is perpendicular to the center of the zipper), and then fix the top stop of the zipper to the two longitudinal chucks.
  • Loosen the upper chuck slightly, pull up the tail end of the zipper so that the longitudinal clamping device is parallel, and then lock the upper chuck(at this point, the two longitudinal chucks are at the same horizontal level by visual inspection).
  • Loosen the two transverse chucks and let the tapes on both sides of the zipper into the two clamps and clamp it. Adjust the tension of spring scales on the longitudinal and transverse according to the standard.
  • Set the number of tests, start testing, after a certain number of times, take off the sample, observe and record the damage degree of the sample.

  • Cork Liner (Pack of 50)
  • Cotton Sliver (pack)
  • Photographic Standards (Set of 5)

Scope

  • This test method covers the determination of resistance to the formation of pills and other related surface changes on textile fabrics. The method utilizes the Random Tumble Pilling Tester. The procedure is generally applicable to all types of woven and knitted apparel fabrics.
    • Note:- For other methods of testing the pilling resistance of textiles, refer to the following ASTM methods:
    • D3511 test for Pilling Resistance and Other Related Surface Changes of Textile Fabrics: Brush Pilling Tester Method.
    • D3514 Test for Resistance of Apparel Fabrics to Pilling (Elastomeric Pad Method)

For directions covering the measurement of resistance to pilling by the Appearance Retention Tester, refer to Method D 1375 in the 1973 Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Part 24. For direction covering the measurement of resistance to pilling by the Inflated Diaphragm Tester and the Reciprocating Table Tester, Refer to Method D 1375 in the 1966 Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Part 24.

  • Some fabrics that have been treated with a silicone resin cannot be satisfactorily tested by this procedure because the silicone resin appears to rub off on the cork liners in the test chamber and to cause erroneously low results.
  • This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of who everuses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Definations

  • Fuzz : untangled fibre ends that protrude from the surface of a yarn of fabric.
  • Pilling resistance : resistance to the formations pills on a textile fabric.
  • Pills : Bunches or balls of tangled fibers that are held to the surface of a fabric by one or more fibers.
  • For definitions of other textile terms used in this method, refer to Terminology D123.

Summary Of Test Method

Pilling and other changes in surface appearance, such as fuzzing, that occur in normal wear are simulated on a laboratory testing machine. Fabrics are caused to form typical pills by a random rubbing motion produced by tumbling  specimens in a cylindrical test chamber lined with a mildly abrasive material. In order to form pills that resemble those produced in actual wear in appearance and structure, small amounts of short length cotton fiber (gray in color) are added to each test chamber with the specimens. The degree of fabric pilling is evaluated by comparison of the tested specimens with visual standards that may be actual fabrics or photographs of fabrics or photographs of fabrics,   showing a range of pilingresistance. The observed resistance to pilling is reported on an arbitrary scale ranging from No.5 (no pilling) to No.1 (verysevere pilling).

Uses And Significance

  • The pilling of textile fabrics is very complex property because it is affected by many factors, such as type of fiber of blend, fiber dimensions, yarn and fabric construction, and fabric-finishing treatments. This method of testing fabrics for resistance to pilling is not recommended for acceptance testing of commercial shipment, because the between-laboratory precision is poor. In some cases the purchaser and the supplier may have to test a commercial shipment of one or more specific materials by the best available method, even though the method has not been recommended for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. In such a case, if there is a disagreement arising form differences in values reported by the purchaser and the supplier when using this method or acceptance testing, the statistical bias, if any, between the laboratory of the purchaser and the laboratory of the supplier should be determined with each comparison being based on testing specimens randomly drawn from one sample of material of the type being evaluated.
  • The pilling resistance of a specific fabric in actual wear varies with individual wearers and general conditions of use. As a consequence, it can be expected that garments of the same fabric will show a fairly wide pilling resistance spectrum after wear and much greater variation in wear that in replicate fabric specimens subjected to controlled laboratory tests. This experience should be borne in mind when adopting levels of acceptability for any series of standards.
  • Finishes and fabric surface changes may exert a large effect on pilling. Therefore with some fabrics, it may be desirable to test before as well as after laundering or dry cleaning, or both.
  • Pills observed in worn garments vary appreciably in size and appearance, the latter depending particularly in the presence of lint and degree of color contrast, factors that are not evaluated when pilling is rated solely on the number of pills. The development of pills may be accompanied by other surface phenomena such as loss of cover, color change, or the development of fuzz. Since the overall acceptability of a specific fabric is dependent of both the characteristics of the pills and the other factors affecting surface appearance, it is considered desirable that fabrics tested in the laboratory be evaluated subjectively with regard to their acceptability and not rated solely on the number of pills developed. A series of standards, based on graduated degrees of surface change of the fabric type being tested, may be set up to provide a basis for subjective ratings. The visual standards are most advantageous when the laboratory test specimens correlate closely in appearance with worn garments, that is, show similar ratio of pills to fuzz, etc. Counting the pills and weighting their number with respect to their size and contrast, as a combined measure of pilling resistance is not recommended because of the excessive time required for counting, sizing, and calculation.

Apparatus, Reagents, And Materials

  • Random Tumble Pilling Tester, including air injection device with the following accessories.
    • Cork Cylinder Liners, about 146mm (5¾ in.) wide by 452mm (17 13/16 in.) long cut from 1.5-mm ( 1/16 –in.) thick flat sheets of Type P2117A material conforming to Specification F104. • Methyl Ethyl Ketone, technical, for diluting the rubber adhesive.
  •  Standard pilling Test Fabric, having and established pilling resistance rating for checking machine performance.
  •  Fabric Rating Standards – A series of tested specimen of a specific fabric type which show degrees of pilling orboth, for the fabric to be tested. Store the fabric rating standards and handle them under conditions that will preserve their original form and appearance. Mounting with thick cardboard framing around the specimens is recommended.
  •  Photographic Rating Standards – A set of five photographs 105 mm square numbered 1 to 5 illustrating varyingdegrees of pilling from “very severe pilling” t “no pilling”.
  •  Apparatus for Fabric Evaluation –Facilities for illumination and simultaneous viewing of test specimen and fabricor photograph rating standards.
  • Facilities for Laundering samples.
  • Facilities for Drycleaning samples.

Sampling

  • Take a lot sample as directed in the applicable material specification, or as agreed upon by the purchaser and seller. In the absence of such a specification or other agreement, take a laboratory sample as directed.
  • If sampling from rolls or pieces of woven or warp knits fabric in the lot sample, cut at least one laboratory sample the full width of the fabric and at least 305 mm (1ft) along the selvedge. From circular knit fabrics cut a band at least 305mm wide.
  • If sample from garments, take fabric samples as agreed upon by all interested parties.
