The main purpose of slot resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) is to measure the winding temperature within the iron package of stators or rotors. They generally feature a flat and slimline construction. Slot resistance temperature detectors are made using two methods. In the first version, a platinum resistance wire is bifilar coiled, allowing measurement over a longer stretch of the element. Alternatively, a cheaper alternative features a platinum thin-film measuring resistor (chip), although this allows only a point measurement. Depending on the available space, construction and electrical or mechanical requirements, a range of materials are used.
