Pycnometer Bottle

Purpose:
Used to determine the specific gravity of solids (especially soil or cement) and liquids by comparing the weight of a known volume of liquid in the bottle.

1. Material:

   • Borosilicate Glass (heat and chemical resistant)

   • Sometimes available in stainless steel or plastic for field use

2. Capacity:

   • Standard size: 900 ml (1 liter)

   • Other common sizes: 250 ml, 500 ml

3. Stopper:

   • Glass or brass conical stopper with a fine bore hole (approx. 1.5 mm)

   • Ensures air escapes when filled with liquid

   • Leak-proof fit

4. Graduation/Marking:

   • Clear calibration mark near the neck to indicate volume

   • Some models may have etched or printed volume indicators

5. Neck:

   • Narrow, cylindrical neck to minimize evaporation and error

   • Designed for precise volume control
