Curcuma longa is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, commonly known as the turmeric plant. It has large, broad, lance-shaped green leaves that grow up to 1 meter in height and produces cone-shaped inflorescences with pale yellow flowers. The plant thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained, fertile loamy or sandy soil and prefers partial to full sunlight. It propagates through underground rhizomes, which are thick, aromatic, and yellow-orange in color. The ideal growing temperature ranges between 20°C to 35°C, with a crop duration of approximately 7 to 9 months. Mature rhizomes are harvested once the leaves start drying and are then boiled, dried, and ground into turmeric powder. Curcuma longa is cultivated for its culinary, medicinal, and dyeing properties and contains the active compound curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
