An Armature Growler Tester is an essential electrical testing instrument designed to detect shorted turns, open circuits, and grounds in armature windings. The device consists of a coil wound on an iron core, connected to an alternating current source. When the growler is placed on an armature, it functions as the primary winding of a transformer, while the armature coils act as the secondary winding.
A thin steel strip, known as a feeler, is used to locate faults when moved over a shorted coil, the strip vibrates strongly and emits a growling sound, indicating the presence of a short circuit. This simple yet effective method makes the growler an indispensable diagnostic tool in electrical motor repair and maintenance workshops.
