Maize Product Description

Also called Indian corn, or Maize. It is a cereal grain that was first grown by people in ancient Central America. Like many other regions, it is preoccupy as a vegetable although it is a grain crop. The grains are rich in vitamins A, C and E, carbohydrates, and essential minerals, and contain 9% protein. About 50 species exist and abide of different colors, textures and grain shapes and sizes. White, yellow and red are the most common types. The white and yellow varieties are preferred by most people depending on the region.

The maize is cultivated throughout the year in different parts of the country for various purposes including grain, fodder, green cobs, sweet corn, baby corn, pop corn etc. The major maize growing states that contributes more than 80% of the total maize production in India are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh.

Maize can be grown successfully in wide range of soils ranging from loamy sand to clay loam. However, soils with good organic matter content having high water holding capacity with neutral pH are considered good for higher productivity. Being a sensitive crop to moisture stress particularly excess soil moisture and salinity stresses; it is desirable to avoid low lying fields having poor drainage and also the field having higher salinity. Therefore, the fields having provision of proper drainage should be selected for cultivation of maize.

As starches, sweeteners and ethanol, all made from the starch portion of the corn, refiners produce Corn oil and a variety of important Feed products like gluten meal, gluten feed, corn germ meal and condensed fermented corn extractives. Corn is the essential ingredient for making tortillas, tamales, hominy, and pozole. Corn Silk is helpful in any irritation of the urinary system. It is used for renal problems in children and as a urinary demulcent combined with other herbs in the treatment of cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis and the like.
